As a mental health clinician, we all know ethical guidelines, research, diagnostic criteria, and duties of the position. We have spent years studying, training, and preparing for boards. But, now you are licensed and trying navigate stepping into the role. Many clinicians aren’t confident in applying their skills, especially early on in their career. However, as a licensed mental health clinician you can’t afford errors due lack of confidence in diagnosing, treating, and providing support to help patients with cognitive, behavioral, and emotional challenges. If you aren’t confident, comfortable, or willing to consistently expand your knowledge in the field your clients and career will be impacted.
I’ve come in contact with many therapists that at one point or another have felt like an ‘imposter”. What I often see is fear of getting it wrong because diagnosing and treating a patient are two very different skills. Many clinicians are confident in diagnosing. However, many aren’t confident in providing treatment so they feel like an “imposter” and their confidence takes a hit. What is really happening is that the clinician is over extending themselves and watering down their skills.
I have identified various barriers to being successful, comfortable, and confident as a mental health clinician. For example, one that I’ve witnessed is clinicians trying to treat it all vs. specializing in a specific area. While you are licensed to diagnose and treat all mental health conditions, that doesn’t mean you should. It’s okay to “tap”. You aren’t less of a clinician by saying, “I’m not confident in treating the challenges you are experiencing”. In fact, it would be unethical to treat issues you are unfamiliar with.
What if you found an area that you found intriguing and poured all of your efforts into gaining education, certifications, and experience in?
What do you think would change? Confidence? Comfortability? Skill? Better patient outcomes?
I can help you identify your strengths, weaknesses, and a path forward to advance within your career.
